Which Plants Do Well in Shades

To eliminate sunlight completely from a plant would be disastrous for the plant’s development and growth. There are some plants that will do well in 3-4 hours and that will be sufficient which includes filtered sunlight. The following sections are to be considered as shade plants.

  • Blue Hosta which gets its name from its deep blue coloured leaves. Popular used as borders, under trees and sometimes in containers.
  • Lobelia A purple plant what is used in containers and window boxes.
  • Coleus Another favourite used as borders in many gardens as it spreads quicky with its colourful foliage of deep burgundy, yellow and green leaves combined.
  • Bleeding Heart Known for being a survival plant in many areas with pink hue and dashes of white.
  • Forget-me-not Floral plant with colours of pink, purple and white.
  • Scarlet Dreams Cinquefoil This is a bulb which bloom flowers in abundance which gives the option for either full or partial shade.
  • Astilbe Plant Lush and feathery fronds similar to the fern but offers beautiful colours in red, pink, white and purple. A natural attraction for bees.
  • Lilly-of -the valley Great pollinators with flowers resembling tiny white bells.

One of the most amazing things about plant life is their ability to adapt to their environment. Some will require lots of sunshine, others just filtered light or shade. Our job is to study them and to take care of them so their needs are fulfilled, and we will be able to continue to enjoy them for a long time.
