Taking Care of Your Plants While on Vacation

We all do need vacations and the questions comes to mind what do I do with my plants ? With a recent experience to ensure that my effort in taking care of these plants would not be in vain. I took the following steps which should also be helpful for those who will be away from home. It would be ideal if you could employ a house sitter or have someone come and water the plants but that may not always be convenient.

Water is important

Water the plant sufficiently enough just before leaving with enough so it spills over with a tray to contain the excess in this way the plant will just extract what is in the tray when needed.

 Filtered light

Allowing the sunlight to filter through instead of leaving it in direct sunlight which will make the plant dry out much faster and possibly burn the leaves. In this way the plant gets the necessary nutrients to survive.

 Drip System

A drip system can be used and what you are doing is the same method used in some farming system call the drip irrigation system. You can purchase it or create your own by using a plastic bottle and creating holes at the top invert it into the soil and slowly the plant will be getting the water it needs at a slower pace.

Incubator

Prior to leaving for vacation, I had started a plant from a vine and left it in an incubator or a mini green house. I placed the vine on a wet paper towel with water, sealed in a plastic bag and left it in filtered light and it continued to grow. Making a greenhouse using transparent plastic is also another option.

With these suggestions in mind your plants will survive your vacation time away from them and they should be looking just as good as before you left them.
