Lemon Trees

Lemon Trees

Why buy lemons in the store when it is possible to grow them on your own. You may be considering several factors like I live in a cold country or I don’t have a green house or perhaps I just don’t have the time on my busy schedule. Lemon trees are found in many parts of the world from China to the USA and many countries with tropical climate.

If you live in a warm climate throughout the year, there is a good chance of growing these trees outside. Or take them indoors for the winter and move them outdoors as the cold season ends.

Meyer Lemon

One of the most popular trees is the Meyer Lemon. They can be grown in your garden in a sunny area requiring at least eight hours of sunlight. You will enjoy them as they are low maintenance trees. They are also noted for attracting bees to your garden which will assist with the pollination process although they are self-pollinated.

Be mindful that these plants have thorns which is a defence mechanism to protect the plant. The lemon plant should blossom and will leave your garden smelling amazing. If indoors place the plant in an area of your home which experiences the most sunlight for at least eight hours. If you are unable to find a place in your home with enough sunlight then use a grow light which can be inexpensive depending on your preference.

Water only when it's necessary

Water the plant when it becomes dry and if you have it in a container indoors test the soil to see if its dry and then water accordingly. The lemon plant is known for its longevity, and some have been known to have a life span for fifty years and even up to one hundred years and that makes it a very durable plant to keep provided that the proper nutrients are given. A slow releasing nitrogen fertilizer is recommended.

Pruning is essential for healthy growth

If you wish to keep the plant small continue to prune it to avoid overgrowth. You can expect the plant to produce fruit throughout the year and in this way, you should be able with time to enjoy the fruits of your labour by using the fruit for delicious juices to pies to various baked goods or using the leaves which are great in making teas.

The plant is a great addition to any space. Keeping the tree out of the pathway of others is essential because of the thorns that are a part of the tree in order to avoid injury to others. Find the ideal space that will not be attractive to inquisitive hands would be best with great sunlight and hopefully you will enjoy this plant for many years to come.
