Can Palm Trees Grow In Cold Countries

I can never forget travelling to Florida and admiring the beautiful landscape filled with palm trees of different varieties, shapes and sizes and have often wondered is it possible to grow any of these in a cold country? All sorts of questions flooded my mind how I would take care of it and what kinds of conditions are necessary and finally is it worth the hassle ?

I was left with no choice but to find ones that are resilient to the cold temperatures including the dwarf species and just keep it indoors and conclude that palm trees can grow in cold countries with certain limitations.

As a rule, when it comes to keeping tropical plant indoors always provide an environment that generally imitates their natural environment. Also recognize that they can be subject to dust mites which are constantly using plants to feast on. I have discovered that most plants indoors seem to attract these creatures which feed on the plant extracting the nutrients from them and eventually destroying the plant. I have selected a few palm trees for you to enjoy and take care of even if you live in a cold country.

 Lady Palm

This tree will grow over six feet tall and has been used for privacy because of its shape and thickness. A good palm to block out your neighbours from seeing what is going in your back yard especially around pool area. It can also be used around bay windows or any area for concealment in your home. There are also a few varieties of the Lady Palm I especially love the slender lady palm due to the shape of the leaves creating a formation like a fan. It is such a beautiful palm.

 Areca Palm

This palm is used many times in home décor. It is also known as the bamboo palm. If you have the chance to see the bamboo plant in its natural habitat you will see the similarities with this palm especially looking at the trunk. Beautiful green leaves like clusters of feathers put together. It's an excellent indoor plant and to have anywhere in your home.

 European Fan Palm

Also known as the Mediterranean Fan palm. It is a slow growing palm which makes it excellent for a house plant. It needs lots of sunlight during the day and have been known to grow over 7 feet tall. The tree has been used many times for landscaping especially used in tropical climates. What is amazing about this plant is its fronds changing from green to silver and reminds me of Christmas with the decorative lights and changing colours. Also, the fronds curves upward and looks like the shape of a flower. The European palm makes a wonderful addition to any container or outdoor garden space. Be aware of the prickly edges of the leaves so keep it safely tucked away from kids and from your pets.

 Saw Palmetto Palm

Known for its longevity and is great for landscaping. It is a slow growing plant and will grow up to ten feet It is known for its variety in colours ranging from green to silver or even bluish silver. It is a small palm with its fan shaped fonds and low spread leaves it will need lots of space to grow in your garden. Lots of sunshine is require but will be adaptable to its surroundings in light sunlight conditions.

 Pygmy Date Palm

Although this plant has edible fruits you should understand that it is poisonous and can cause bruising to the skin from its spiny thorns located on the leaves. So be aware if you are planning to purchase this plant. It can be grown in your garden or in containers and brought indoors for the winter season.

Sago Palm

Although this palm is not considered a true palm even though they have a similar resemblance. They can be grown outdoors as well as indoors. Just be careful not to overwater the plant and make sure the soil is dry before giving additional water.

While palm trees offer challenges in cold weather they are truly to be admired for their beauty and will generally last for a long time with proper care.
