Building a Summer Garden

As the summer season approaches thinking about building a summer garden to share with family and friends is just wonderful and it’s a time to share and teach kids how to take care of a garden. Before getting started there needs to be some planning so the garden will be creative and organized.

 Plan a Design

The layout of the garden is essential to make use of the space that is available. The easiest way is to decide what types of plants are the best for the location. Sunlight is essential for most plants whether it requires filtered sunlight or direct light. As part of the planning process, make a sketch of what you would like. Or another way is to visit a garden centre and take pictures of the garden they have as a show piece and improvise with your own creative ideas incorporated into the design.

While designing your layout include focal points and paths or benches that enhance your garden area. Also keeping in mind any existing structures, trees and shrubs that may be in the pathway. A design on paper allows you to visualize the garden prior to building the concept and also gives you the opportunity to make changes to suite your own personal liking.

 Choice of Plants

After deciding on the design, consider the type of plants to be grown in the garden space. Plants Like tulips will bloom very early in the season as spring approaches. While other plants like petunias will practically last the entire summer with the proper care. Incorporating a mixture of plants in the garden will allow for a continuous bloom throughout the season. Consider choosing a variety of plants to have your garden constantly blooming.

 Tools

Obtain the appropriate tools like shovel, a garden hose, pruning shears, a garden fork, a tiller which will help in planting to loosen the soil and assist with removing unwanted debris and allows for a smoother vegetation to work with as the clumps will be removed easily.

 Create a Space

Preparing the area that will be the garden by removing the existing vegetation from weeds and unwanted debris. Having the soil tilled and adding compose or organic soil will enhance the area and create a rich soil for the garden to survive. Also adding addition soil is important especially if the area selected does not have enough soil or the soil may be poor in essential nutrients for a healthy plant growth.

One of the most difficult things to do is to keep the animals away from the garden. They seem to think that you have planted it just for them. A raised garden a few inches off the ground can be helpful. Or add plants that deter them from being attractive to the space like lavender, daffodil and rosemary or even garlic which is a strong deterrent for rabbits. Otherwise, you may want to take an extra step by adding a physical barrier to protect the plants especially for vegetable gardens.

 Following Instructions

It is aways important to follow the instructions given on the labels especially take note of distance from each plant and how deep the plants will need to be in the ground. Also, some vegetables cannot be planted together to avoid cross pollination. Once this is done always water the plant using a hose or watering can that gives a gentle shower on the plants and not overpower the plant with a force of water. The gentle shower allows the plant to stay in the hole without being uprooted and will be able to continue its growth cycle.

 Mulch

You can also add much which helps to keep the soil moist and prevents the continuous need to be removing weeds from the garden. Mulch also assists with the regulations of temperature of the soil. If you are planting seedlings quite often the sun’s rays can be damaging to these new plants and mulch acts as a barrier which filters the sunlight to prevent the scorching heat from the sun especially during the summer months and helps to support the newly planted seedlings.

Applying organic mulch by using existing leaves that have been raked is a good example to use as a mulch. Others organic materials like wood chips can be used around the plant.

 Fertilizers

It is also important to use fertilizers to make sure the plants have enough nutrients to prevent yellowing or wilting of the plant. Keeping in mind that some plants will require more fertilizing than others. One simple way to find out what you soil needs is to have it tested in this way you will avoid the guess work and be more selective in the type of fertilizer that you are going to purchase. There are many fertilizers that are ready made and can be bought in many stores or garden centers or if you prefer using organic materials as another method that is also another option.

Thinking of throwing out your eggshells. Well, that’s one of the best fertilizers for any garden and are especially amazing to use for the enhancement of root growth. You can either use them directly smashed into the soil or ground into a power form and added and blended with the soil. Eggshells add calcium carbonate creating a lower acidic level for some plants.

Using coffee grounds also makes a good addition to the soil as a fertilizer and also assist with the prevention of adding this product to our landfills. Used coffee grounds are essential for adding minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium and other minerals. Sprinkle the grounds into the soil and use a rake to blend it in with the soil.

Manure is such an effective fertilizer. When using this as a fertilizer it is best to use animals that have been grazing on plants and especially not on hay that has been treated with herbicides.  Manure needs to be mixed in with the soil to be effective for your plant growth.

Worm casing added to the garden as a fertilizer will boost the growth of the plants. They are the substance that the worm excretes and resembles the soil. Blend this with the soil to create a rich product consisting of organic matter.

 Maintaining the Garden

A continuous maintenance is necessary to prevent insect infestation. It is best to catch any bugs and treat the plant quickly to avoid the spread of insects and also disease from wiping out your crop entirely.

Once the garden has been growing successfully it is necessary to prune them which helps to alleviate dead branches and help with the overall health of the plant. Pruning also assist the new shoots that would normally be slower to grow to progress faster and helps in more production of fruits or flowers to grow. It is important to remove excess branches and you will notice that the plant will begin to regrow and become much healthier.

If it is difficult to continuously keep planting every season, try using bulbs like peonies which come in a variety of colours. The white cap peony is a Japanese style flower which has a deep, burgundy-coloured petals with white petals in the centre. It is also a scented flower and will sure to attract bees for pollination and will leave your garden with a beautiful scent that it is known for.

Candy stripe peony is a beautiful pink tone flower which will be sure to give your garden a boost for spring. The flowers are double and marbled with colours of fuchsia beautifully blended and makes a great bouquet for your indoor space. By adding the lily with a variety of colours the garden will be vibrant and full of colours. Daffodils add beauty to the garden and are available in many varieties. The double daffodils have a good chance of surviving any place where they are placed and will last for quite some time.

Dahlia produces such vibrant colours in red, yellow, orange, white and blend of colours mixed together. Your garden is sure to look outstanding.

Once these bulbs have completed their blooms as the season ends, you can remove the bulbs and store in a dry place for the next season or leave them in the ground and they should return for the next blooming season.

 Pruning

The best time to prune is generally after the plant has completed its flowering cycle. Unless it has been taken over by a disease or a bug infestation then you will need to prune immediately and isolate the plant to prevent the disease from spreading to the other plants and infecting them.

If you notice the branches are overlapping and it looks overgrown. It’s a good chance it will need to be pruned. Having the right tools is important like pruning shears which are generally used for cutting flowers, or small shrubs.

 Adding Décor

Don’t be afraid to add some décor to the space. Solar lights have become very popular and is a great way to utilize the rays of the sun and enjoy as the sun sets. Adding bird baths and windmills and even the scarecrow to keep the animals away are useful. There are so many options in choosing decorative enhancements some in the shape of animals, little people, angels, and animals which gives the garden an uplift.

Create a space you can enjoy that takes you to a place of peace and tranquility. Reading a book on a nice bench or listening to some good music and if you like the sound of water flowing then you can always add a waterfall which does not have to be expensive. Or a chime with the wind blowing and at the end of the day it will be your very own paradise.

Don’t try to aways achieve perfection. Consider your garden as an experiment with different types of colours and plants. In the beginning it is difficult to see the vision of what will work in your space.  It is mostly a trial and error and to see what the final results will achieve. What is great about this is, with this option you can always change it the next season if you are dissatisfied with the intended results. Once you have achieved the look you desire it’s just adding new plants, pruning, and recycling the old plants.

 Getting the Family Involved

Taking care of a garden is hard work but can be achieved if you love to plant or are interested in learning how to become a good gardener. It requires a bit of research and knowing which plants will do well for the type of zone that you live in. You may want to start by using a small space and see how it performs and involve the family and especially kids and will be a good way to teach them how foods are grown.

It’s a great outdoor activity for the family and keeps your mind and body fit with exercise and fresh air.  Eventually the kids will want to have their own space to plant their own garden. They may be interested in a vegetable garden and it’s a good way to get them to start eating vegetables which most kids do not enjoy. Once they have taken care of the space, they will be encouraged to taste what they have laboured for and enjoy it.

Your garden is in a continuous phase of changes, and this will occur as we move from one season to the next. You may want to add or remove plants that have completed their cycle and add new ones to blend in with the seasons. Gardening is a learning experience, and it is hard to achieve perfection. The best way to learn is to experiment and see which plants will thrive in the space you have created. It may take a few tries to achieve the final results but in the end you will be happy that you persevered and succeeded.

Sunlight is essential for most plants weather it requires filtered sunlight or direct light.

Also, certain vegetables cannot be planted together to avoid cross pollination.

Once these bulbs have completed their blooms as the season ends, you can remove the bulbs and store in a dry place for the nest season or leave them in the ground and they should return for the next blooming season.

Sunlight is essential for most plants weather it requires filtered sunlight or direct light.

Also, certain vegetables cannot be planted together to avoid cross pollination.

There are many fertilizers that are ready made and can be bought in many stores or garden centers or if you prefer using organic materials are also another method that is also another option.

Once the garden has been growing successfully it is necessary for most plants to prune them which helps to alleviate dead branches and help with the overall health of the plant.

The white cap peony offers is a Japanese style flower which has a deep, burgundy-coloured petals with white petals in the centre. It is also a scented flower and will sure to attract bees for pollination and will leave your garden with a beautiful scent that it is known for.

The flowers are double and marbled with colours of fuchsia beautifully blended and makes a great bouquet for your indoor space. By adding the lily with a variety of colours the garden will be vibrant and full of colours. Daffodils add beauty to the garden and are available in many varieties.
